Discovery Of The Week : Last Week’s Post

Discovery Of The Week : Last Week’s Post
August 24, 2015 ahdora

Surely there’s no way I’m going to pretend as though I didn’t miss last week’s posts. Sigh* I was itchy to share so much, but between internet issues and walking around the city of Dakar, it was tough to sit and blog. I spent more time sharing my trip on my social media handles. So, here’s a quick catch up on last week’s DOTW.

‘Meet the Men behind Grill At The Pent’: I randomly stumbled across this video on youtube. It’s a feature of the team behind what I consider the most successful night life party in Lagos, Grill At The Pent (GATP). The parties are primarily run and managed by Dewunmi Adebesin – Bankhead Entertainment. This video is a mini documentary on the friends that started this entertainment platform, and an exploration of the growth they’ve experienced thus far. I’ve actually never attended a GATP party, because I’m not big on parties, but I’ve watched this brand grow over the past few years, and one thing is certain, these guys have been consistent. The documentary director, Yomi Black, did a pretty good job showing the friendship between these boys, and the dynamics of the brand. I enjoyed watching it.

‘As a Man Thinketh’ by James Allen : I’ll just share the book decription from goodreads. The mind guides our footsteps as we progress along the pathway of life. Purity of mind leads inevitably to purity of life, to the precious love and understanding that should control our everyday acts and attitudes towards friends and foes.

But where must one look for guidance? How does one achieve purity of mind that alone brings happiness and confidence?

The author offers his clear answers in this book As A Man Thinketh. His words have helped millions for more than a century–and they continue to point the true way to a better life for a troubled humanity.

“Out of a clean heart comes a clean life and a clean body,” James Allen writes. “out of a defiled mind proceeds a defiled life and a corrupt body.”

Too many mortals strive to improve only their wordly position–and too few seek spiritual betterment. Such is the problem James Allen faced in his own time. The ideas he found in his inner-most heart after great searching guided him as they will guide you.

You can buy it on Amazon.

Jus De Gingembre (Ginger Juice):Gingembre is a drink I discovered in Senegal. I’ve had ginger juice before, but this was a different type – it’s basically fresh ginger, sugar, and vanilla essence. The drink is said to give energy, stimulate the appetite, and aid digestion. Here’s a quick recipe I found online.

My Philosophy for a Happy life by Sam Berns: Sam Berns is a Junior at Foxboro High School in Foxboro, Massachusetts, where he has achieved highest honors and is currently a percussion section leader in the high school marching band. He recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Sam was diagnosed with Progeria, a rare, rapid aging disease, at the age of 2.

In this video, Sam talks about 3 aspects of his philosophy for a Happy life. My favorite quote from this video is “Be okay with what you ultimately can’t do, because there’s so much that you can do.” He has such an amazing outlook on life!

Osengwa.Com: Call this a shameless plug for a friend, but i’ve watched this young lady juggle working in a financial position for a fortune 500 company in the US, taking care of personal responsibilities, grinding, writing personal essays for grad school programs, and somehow managing to still pursue her creative passion. And last week, she finally gave birth – Osengwa was born! I’m super proud and excited to watch this journey unfold, and i cannot wait to celebrate our many joys together. Yes, Yes, this is an open show of love for you S.A.M.

What is Osengwa ? A Neo-African Encounter. It is an occasion to see, hear and feel voices of the new generation of artists birthed from the continent but influenced by the continuously evolving spectrum of  global culture. As a collection of lovingly curated pieces of contemporary African influenced art, music, clothing and designs; it provides a platform for immersion and participation in the Neo- African movement.
