GET READY FOR THAT ONE FAMILY MEMBER WHO DOESN’T APPROVE.
Most artists I’ve met including myself have almost similar stories growing up as little kids and wanting to become professional artists in future, but there’s always this one person that will strongly disapprove of this choice. In my case, a very close family friend played this ‘role’ perfectly. I visited his family one Sunday afternoon to say ‘hi’ to the new born baby, and while I enjoyed the delicious plate of white rice & stew his wife prepared, I never forgot his exact words when he learn’t I had decided to study Fine & Applied arts in my University years – He said “So you went through WAEC, JAMB and POST JAMB and got an admission into the university only to study fine art!?’’, while shaking his head in disappointment.
Thank God for the Grace to ignore the negative energy coming from him.
SLEEPLESS NIGHTS WILL BE YOUR BEST FRIEND.
Obviously everyone knows that for you to become really good at what you do you must be ready to put in the work. In becoming a better artist!? You must prepare yourself to join the team #NIGHTCRAWLERS. Yes I said it and of course it won’t be easy but you’ll get use to it and eventually you’ll get to love it too! Working/Learning/Practicing at night is so peaceful, I think.
RELAX! YOU’RE NOT THE ONLY CREATIVE ONE ON THE BLOCK.
More Talent, Less Ego. Pride is something we’ve all got as humans but understanding and knowing how to tame the pride in you will definitely grow you as a creative person. A mentor once said to me ‘’when you’re done creating a new piece and think to yourself ‘this is perfect!’ that is when you should stop and take a good look at your work again to discover the flaws and try to improve on the next’’. Yes, the likes/love/support on your works will be coming from different angles but never let it distract you from what really matters.
In essence, you should never let pride distract you from improving every day. 0% pride will really help you to discover the best of your abilities.
YOU WILL EMBRACE THESE WORDS ‘’WEIRD IS GOOD”
Every single artist I’ve met is weird in they own way. I suppose that’s the only way they could make magic happen. ☺
I think I’ve got two or more categories of friends I spend time with but the ‘‘weirdo’s ‘’ are obviously my creative buddies. Trust me I love every one of us!
SOCIAL GATHERINGS ARE OVERRATED.
People always say ‘Parties are fun’ and yes they are but you can become successful and happy being an introvert occasionally. There’s nothing to worry about since you actually have nothing to lose boycotting so many social gatherings I think. ☺
On the other hand, social gatherings can be an avenue for a creative to relieve stress, and network with people in other professions which is also vital for a creative to grow in this career.
Remember, finding the right balance that suits you is key.
A successful introvert to me is not just that ‘always at home or at the studio guy’.
YOU WILL BE FINANCIALLY SUCCESSFUL:
Be Patient. You will be financially successful. Art is very lucrative.
